Thrilled For New York's Gays Achieving Marriage Equality

The Marriage Equality Act passed earlier tonight in New York State.  Progress is being made and I'm grateful.  I am also sad because I never got to see my kid brother marry the man he loved before he died.  He lived in California and he died in 2006.   It's stupid he couldn't marry a man he loved and spent nearly 15 years with.  So I'm glad.  I hope to see  Marriage Equality across the country before I die.  It'd be good and I do what I can to help make it happen... even if it's just talking about the personal side of it.  My brother was a good man.  A jerk at times, but a good man.  His partner was a decent guy and I'd have been happy to have him as a brother in law.   The progress is good.  It can stand to get better.

Y'all just gotta read this! Woodall, just a few days ago told a woman to take care of her health needs without any assistance from the government, but refuses to put aside his government healthcare - which he does get for free and which he will get for the rest of his life, even if he loses his seat in a later election, just because he served in the Congress. His retort to his constituent: "Because it's free. Folks, if you give people things for free, don't blame them for taking them."

But we citizens -- we can do with out even affordable healthcare!

This post from Crooks & Lairs is from Baratunde Thurston and it addresses the spectacle of a seated US President putting up his birth certificate because a bunch of racist pigs, including Donald Trump refuse to believe he is a citizen.  The truth, to them, must be false simple because our President is black.  They're cowards and worse. No More McDonalds, McDonalds

Hiya.  McDonald's in Baltimore just lost their company a life long customer.  Their employees witnessed and filmed a brutal attack on a trangendered woman and did NOTHING whatsoever to help the victim, not even after the victim started to have a seizure.

This is the note I sent them on their website:

"I am 56 years old.  I've been a life long McDonalds customer. For the record, I'm a straight woman married 25 years.  Today I learned of the assault in one of your Baltimore stores against a trangender person where YOUR stores staff did absolutely nothing to help the victim.  see: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/buster/mcdonalds/mcdonalds-employee-filmed-brutal-beating-640128

As a matter of conscience, because of this incident, in good faith, I find I can no longer wait for McDonald's to step up and create a culture of tolerance where McDonald's employees will do the right thing by all the visitors to the store.  Therefore, after all these years, I will no longer be doing business with McDonald's and/or its franchisees.  I will also be blogging this to my blog at morgansher.blogspot.com

The fact that your morally bankrupt employees failed to render aid to another human being in danger told me everything I need to know about McDonald's business model for the rest of my life.

This is not mine, but it touches the soul of who I am as an American.

Youbelieve public employees don’t deserve good health and retirement benefits.	Ibelieve everyone deserves good health and retirement benefits.
Youbelieve it’s okay to silence your opponents.	Ibelieve everyone’s voice should be heard.
Youbelieve might makes right.	Ibelieve a bully is a bully, whether he’s an angry kid on a playground or an angry man in a suit.
Youbelieve government should be vilified, belittled and shackled.	Ibelieve government is the only institution in the world in which we can all share and participate equally.
Youbelieve in every man for himself.	Ibelieve we are better and stronger when we work together.
Youbelieve “we can’t…”	Ibelieve “We can. We must. We will!”
And so, in this time and place, I plant my flag and make my statement. With all the fervor and strength I can muster I tell you now, YOU CANNOT HAVE MY STATE! There is room in this world for honest disagreements. There is room for differing policy views and different world views. But there is no place in this state, in this world, for the behavior you have chosen. There is no place for those who would trample the rights of anyone, be they in the minority or the majority. There is no place for those who would hide from the voice of the people behind armed authority . There is no place for those who would serve the interests of wealthy corporations ahead of the poor or disadvantaged. There is no place for those who would say “We have nothing to discuss.” I did not ask for this fight. But you have brought it to my home, so fight I will. I will not allow you to create the ugly, selfish, hateful world of your vision. We are better human beings than that. While your world view insists that self-interest is the way forward, my world view rests on the power of community. The new day starts now. We are going to clean house.
